Physician Wellness Services names Alan Rosenstein, M.D., M.B.A. as Medical Director
Physician Wellness Services, a company that helps physicians and health care organizations manage the stress and other mental and behavioral issues that can lead to disruptive behavior and performance issues, has named Alan Rosenstein, M.D., M.B.A., as medical director.
MINNEAPOLIS, MN, June 26, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Physician Wellness Services, a company that helps physicians and health care organizations manage the stress and other mental and behavioral issues that can lead to disruptive behavior and performance issues, has named Alan Rosenstein, M.D., M.B.A., as medical director. Dr. Rosenstein will provide counsel for the company's comprehensive suite of services, bringing with him more than a decade of experience researching the problem of disruptive physicians, advocating for industry standards and developing intervention strategies for addressing the problem.
"Few people understand as well as Alan does the need for a comprehensive, proactive and preventative solution," said Douglas Adamek, Ph.D., the behavioral health pioneer who founded Physician Wellness Services. "Too often we're called to deal with serious problems that could have been prevented had health care organizations stepped in when a doctor first exhibited signs of inappropriate behavior. We believe it's far more cost effective to create an environment that promotes healthy behavior in the first place rather than calling us in after a problem occurs."
In 2006, Dr. Rosenstein co-authored a landmark study of disruptive physician behavior that helped spur the health care industry into action. In response to growing concerns about patient safety, the Joint Commission for Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) issued a Sentinel Alert on Disruptive Physicians; requiring health care organizations publish a defined code of conduct and have a specific process in place for addressing disruptive physician behavior by January 1, 2009. Since then, organizations are actively seeking out providers to help them meet this need.
"The Physician Wellness Services model is the most comprehensive and well-structured solution available anywhere in the nation," said Rosenstein. "Many physicians are unwilling to engage with providers they do not consider their peers. Peer coaching is a basic component of Physician Wellness Services' approach that will help overcome one of the major obstacles physicians face in getting help."
In addition to serving as Medical Director for Physician Wellness Services, Dr. Rosenstein is also vice president and medical director for VHA West Coast, Pleasanton, CA.
