New Novel Details Struggles of Aspiring Female Lawyers, Past and Present
Ruth Rymer's new novel details the challenges faced by a womas entering the legal profession one hundred years ago, connecting female lawyers across time.

MINNEAPOLIS, MN, September 11, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- On the heels of the controversial confirmation of Justice Sonia Sotomayor, author Ruth Rymer offers up her own tale of one woman's struggle to assume her place in the American legal system. Her book "Susannah A. Lawyer: From Tragedy to Triumph" (Langdon Street Press; July 2009; ISBN 978-1-934938-41-6; 14.95) beautifully recreates turn-of-the century Chicago, transporting readers and allowing them to become absorbed in the protagonist's world and her particular set of circumstances. This inspiring and timely story offers both an imaginative escape for readers and a subtle reminder of the challenges faced by aspiring career women both today and yesterday.

In "Susannah A. Lawyer", Susannah Reed's life-long dream of practicing law is nearly crushed just as she is ready to start her studies. Even though her focus is on her education, Susannah's conservative Christian parents have other plans and are forcing her to marry either her childhood sweetheart or mute dunce that has violated her, in order for her to not be seen as a "ruined woman." It seems as though she may not even get to study law much less practice it. As if this isn't enough, unmarried and uncertain of her life ahead, Susannah finds that she may be pregnant.

Although Susannah's story is set in Chicago during the early 1900s, her courage, hope, and determined spirit are timeless. Her joys and challenges will particularly resonate with young women today who are, in their own way, trying to blaze a trail. Susannah's ability to survive and thrive will comfort and enthrall a wide audience of readers.
